Crop Hail Insurance FAQ's

What is hail insurance and what does it cover?

Crop hail insurance protects the livelihood of farmers, who are often at the mercy of sudden weather events.  The insurance is sold on an acre-by-acre basis and reimburses the farmer for the value of the crops destroyed by hail and/or fire.

Do I really need hail insurance for my crops?

You could go without it, just like you could go skydiving without a parachute, but we wouldn’t recommend it.  Hail insurance provides the assurance that bills will get paid if your crop happens to be destroyed by a hail-storm

What crops does a hail insurance policy cover?

Typically all of them, but best to confirm with your insurance agent.

When should I buy my hail insurance?

The earlier the better.  It depends on the weather and when crops are planted, but typically early in the growing season when the crop has emerged.  Remember, it doesn’t cost to obtain a quote, so start early!

What info do I need to get a hail insurance quote?

Your insurance agent will need to gather some information from you, including land location – township, section, range – the type of crop and the value you are assigning the crop.

How do I know how much hail insurance I need to be protected?

It depends on your farm and what your crop is worth to you.  Do you want to cover your input costs?  Do you want to cover your potential profit loss?  It all really depends on what works best for your business.

Evaluating Early Hail Damaged Crops

Early hail strikes the Canadian prairies every year, sometimes before the producer buys hail coverage. We are often asked, it hailed on my crop, I don’t have coverage what should I do?

Put your money where your house is.
